Have you attempted using proxmox containers
if you’re using vmware I’d suggest not being able to install libretime is the least of your problems 
However it makes no different. Its just software that doesn’t really care too much if the host is vmware or physical. But as the other poster said - proxmox is a good option, containers or vms.
